The Neolithic saw the construction of many Severn-Cotswold type in the south-east, the Portal dolmen type and the Passage graves which are characteristic of the Irish Sea area and the Atlantic fa�ade of Europe and Morocco.

This Dolmen located outside Boyle, is an example of a portal dolmen, and was built before 2000BC . The capstone of the tomb, 4.5m x 3m wide, is one of the largest to be seen in Ireland.

Writing in 1743, the antiquarian William Stukeley described the Whispering Knights as sitting upon a round barrow, something that Lambrick accepted as being " reasonable in the context of a portal dolmen ", however he cautioned against accepting such an explanation too readily.
